Suffolk Coast day – March 5 2026

“Emergency coastal defences using rock bags at Thorpeness, Suffolk, England, UK”

Eleven homes have been demolished over recent months due to the ongoing coastal erosion at Thorpeness. The local council have decided to fund emergency defences.

“At a meeting of East Suffolk Council’s cabinet on Tuesday 3 March, funding was agreed to support the urgent installation of rock bags on the beach in front of homes in the Old Homes Road area. Expected to last between two and five years, the rock bags aim to slow erosion and reduce the risk of flooding through wave overtopping to a number of homes and allow time for further future options to be considered.”

Last Thursday 5th March, we finally had some sunshine in Suffolk. I used the opportunity to visit Sizewell to photograph the preliminary construction work for Sizewell C nuclear power station and called by at Thorpeness to see the work on coastal defences.

I also took photos of Sizewell beach and hamlet, a few of Thorpeness village and of Aldeburgh, and on the way home of farm fields crossed by polytunnels at Wantisden.
