“Fishermans Wharf, The Galley Pub, The South Pier, Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, UK”
185 new images from this day-out in Lowestoft. The one above is probably the most ‘photographic’ and least ‘stocky’ – if that makes any sense.
The purpose was to create saleable stock photos from a rail journey up the East Suffolk line to Lowestoft railway station, returning home from two miles down the line from Oulton Broad South railway station.
Several years ago – I’ve just checked and it was actually a staggering 14 years ago in 2012 – I walked in a series of stages from Ness Point ( UK’s most easterly place) to Diss. I thought it timely to revisit that idea. Back then I walked down to Ness Point and then turned west and walked to Beccles. But this time I wanted to have a good look around Lowestoft and concentrate on stock rather than the walk.
So what images did I take? Three railway stations, several trains, a bingo hall, a former ropeworks, a Salvation Army church, the country’s most easterly theatre and most easterly snack bar, several offshore vessels in the harbour, a giant wind turbine called Gulliver, Ness Point itself, an abandoned caravan or possibly a family home?, the Birds Eye frozen food factory, a seaside caravan park, municipal gardens and cafe, several museums one floating, a lighthouse, a Tandoori restaurant, a long established Beatles themed restaurant, quite a bit of Victorian architecture, an amusements arcade, a Wimpy burger bar, the restoration of the Town hall, 1953 flood level markers, some fine sadly empty old pubs and boarded up historic hotel, a Citizens Advice office, lots of different High Street and specialist shops, an artwork of Bewick’s swans flying overhead, three banks, some street musicians performing, people using ATM machines, information about sculptor Laurence Edwards, an enterprising repurposing of the old Post Office to make new art space, a Wetherspoons pub, a fish and chips takeaway, an empty department store, two pawnbrokers, an RNLI Lifeboat man sculpture, South pier, a quirky barber shop with a jokey name, a tiny electric vehicle, historic vessels being restored in boatyards including one with links to Churchill in WW2, a fine old waterside hotel, a person’s name painstakingly carved into a brick wall, a business that never reopened after Covid, sailing yachts moored in a marina, a fascia sign for Lloyds.
