This walk along the River Waveney was a continuation of the one I started a while back from Ness Point, Lowestoft. The weather forecast wasn’t great and although it started off okay I ended up getting soaked. More to the point the heavy overcast sky, dull light, then torrential rain over the last few miles, made photography difficult then impossible.
The slideshow is all I was able to come home with from this trip, mostly taken near the start of the walk in Carlton Marshes close to Oulton Broad.
I found the Via Beata way mark sign interesting. It is an attempt to set up a pilgrimage route of around 400 miles across the county from Lowestoft to St David’s in Pembrokeshire. The motivation combines Christianity and art along the way including visits to churches. It appears to have roots at the Suffolk end and there is a website with interactive map and so on.
I did this walk in stages from Lowestoft to Diss in 2012. The 20 mile gap between Diss and Thetford stopped me going any further. But I thought it was time to revisit this idea in 2026 and to see how I got on. And obviously to take stock photos on the way.
I can say that 14 years later the walk was slightly harder than I remembered but that is what age and inactivity does. In all it was about 11.5 miles today and that was enough.
