Alamy Sales August 2026

Penang, Malaysia 1985

The picture above was taken on Fuji negative film in 1985. A few years later when I first became interested in stock photography I was disappointed to learn that agencies were only interested in slide film and that none of my photos of Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal were of any use. So, it is always pleasing to see these old film copies actually find a use. They were the reason that I spent out c £2k on film scanner when I started with Alamy in 2002.

Several more old film copies feature in the August sales, some of mine, some of the recent films scans I have been doing of other people’s images. How I wish I had taken more photos back then before it became history! Seriously, that is where there is a lack of supply of images. More recent subjects are well and truly over-supplied.

Anyway, here is the slideshow of the 45 images that produced 49 licences at Alamy in August 2026. One Public Domain image excluded.

There has been ongoing upset on the Alamy forum since the new contract was announced in mid-July. That contract comes into force today and for those contributors with gross sales below $3000 their commission is cut in half to 20%. Not surprising then that many are packing it in or say that they will stop uploading.

Fortunately, I am not directly affected except by the general air of mistrust and disappointment – by the loss of goodwill that has been created. Also happily I have been non-exclusive since 2012 and my Alamy revenue comes third or fourth annually in my sources of stock photo income. Who knows what will happen to the contract next year or the year after – but for now I carry on and try to keep motivated.

  1. Interesting collection of your August sales. Like yourself I very much regret not shooting more in my youth (50s and 60s). Thanks for the show.
