Geography Photos – July 2024 sales report

“White horse figure carved in chalk scarp slope at Alton Barnes, Wiltshire, England, UK”

This is my second monthly report. The response from Alamy forum members has been encouraging so here goes….

ALAMY

To start with Alamy where I have 88k images. I had 49 sales. 30 to UK, 9 to EU, and 5 each to USA and Rest of the World. The gross amount was $1281.06, giving a mean of $26.14. That average is inflated by one sale of $258. Of the 49 sales 23 were below $10 almost all of those for web use. My net return is $489.74. This is a commission rate of 38% – only 2 sales were through distributors – both to Japan.

7 were of old digitised slides taken by other people ( see various blog posts)

4 were Public Domain images including the $258 sale of a very famous iconic image

1 sold three times – Goldsmiths University, London

5 were taken in UK churches

3 more from my 2015 Sri Lanka trip ( see the recent blog)

Disappointingly, only 4 are from my home county of Suffolk suggesting that staying local isn’t always the answer

Excluding Public Domain My Alamy sales from July 2024 are in this gallery

UNIVERSAL IMAGES GROUP

23k images under Geography Photos, several thousand more under other brand names that I can’t easily locate.

229 sales for $225.66 net. All but 7 via Getty. All non-exclusive. This is the lowest total I remember. As usual nearly all sales are to major publishers for web use. Typically of the ’10 beers from Mexico’, ’20 best beaches in Cornwall’ type. Virtually all of them as low-res small illustrations for online newspaper and magazine stories. I am informed of the client names but don’t feel that I should mention them here.

136 sales to UK, 40 to USA, 39 to EU, 14 Rest of the World

Still hoping for the return to the days when ‘walk-in’ clients would pay the full advertised price. Not sure that will happen. Fingers crossed.

IMAGEBROKER

26k images, most recently added in 2024. All non-exclusive. Again, I am informed of the client names ( hello Alamy!?) but prefer to not mention them.

14 sales for €54.13 net

INFRINGEMENTS

I received 4 payments from different sources during July for a total of £1313. I had payments from Pixsy, Copytrack, Visual Rights. Also, an out of court settlement for one I pursued myself through the Money Claim system. This was after one of the above mentioned had closed the case after being to unable reach settlement. The Money Claim system is an amazing resource for photographers – even large corporates can be made to pay up.
