Royal Navy 1972 – photos by Lieutenant Patrick Wigram

“HMS Glamorgan in the Atlantic Ocean photographed from HMS Triumph February 1972”

Update: This is a small but fascinating set of images was thought to have been taken in 1972 by Lieutenant Patrick Wigram RN. However, it seems that they were actually photographed by his father-in-law Alexander Martin ( see blog post Alexander Martin archive 1914-2003)

The photo above of HMS Glamorgan was taken from HMS Triumph.

HMS Glamorgan was a County-class destroyer completed in 1966.

HMS Triumph was a Colossus-class light fleet aircraft carrier that had been converted for use as a heavy repair ship. It was taken into reserve at Chatham in 1972.

Other ships photographed are RFA Sir Bedivere, RFA Olwen, RFA Lyness.

HMS Glamorgan was hit by an Exocet missile in the Falklands war with the loss of 14 lives. This Wikipedia page provides all the details

There are 22 images in the gallery and at the time of writing the captions are still a work in progress with some gaps and quite likely some errors. I would be very grateful if those more knowledgeable than myself could check and assist with this so that these excellent images are done justice. Please comment below or via email.

I am grateful to members of the Ships Nostalgia forum for their help.
